Dr. Mickey B. Smith is an Associate Professor of Management in the Department of Management at the Mitchell College of Business, University of South Alabama, where he has taught since 2016. He earned his Ph.D. in Business Administration with a concentration in Management from Oklahoma State University, an M.A. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from the University of West Florida, and a B.A. in Psychology from the University of South Alabama. Dr. Smith's expertise centers on strategically leading and developing the people-side of organizations. He teaches courses in human resource management and organizational behavior. Prior to his current role, he served as a research assistant in the Department of Management and International Business at the University of Southern Mississippi from 2014 to 2016. In addition to his teaching and research, Dr. Smith actively consults for various organizations across industries, focusing primarily on executive development and strategy.
Dr. Smith's research specializations include personality, organizational climate, and the emerging implications of AI for employee and team performance. His scholarly work has appeared in leading outlets such as the Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Management, and Journal of Organizational Behavior. He currently serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Organizational Behavior and Journal of Vocational Behavior. Dr. Smith is an engaged member of the Academy of Management, Southern Management Association, and Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. His contributions have earned him recognition for excellence in both teaching and research. Notably, he is a 2026 Rechter Fellow with the Center for Positive Leadership at the University of Louisville. Additionally, he received the Sam and Bonnie Rechter Research Grant from the same center to investigate the consequences of perceived instability in leader personality and behavior, in collaboration with co-author I-Heng Wu.
