Milind Sohoni is Chair and Professor of Operations Management and Strategy in the School of Management at the University at Buffalo, a position he has held since 2023. He also serves as Faculty Director of the Center for Supply Chain Analytics. Prior to joining UB, Sohoni was Full Professor at the Indian School of Business (ISB) from 2017 to 2024, where he advanced through the ranks from Assistant Professor in 2005, and held key administrative roles including Deputy Dean of Faculty and Research, Deputy Dean of Academic Affairs at the Hyderabad Campus, and Deputy Dean for Academic Programs. His earlier career included industry positions such as Research Advisor and Senior Operations Research Specialist at Delta Technology Inc., Member of Technical Staff at AT&T Bell Labs and TransQuest Inc., and Senior Operations Research Specialist at Ryder Integrated Logistics. Sohoni holds a PhD in Operations Research from the Georgia Institute of Technology (2002), an MS in Manufacturing Systems Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin (1994), and a BE in Mechanical Engineering from the College of Engineering Pune, University of Pune, India (1990).
Sohoni's research focuses on supply chain analytics, transportation and logistics, mobility, platform operations and revenue management, healthcare analytics, and non-profit and developmental operations. He employs analytical modeling, optimization, game theory, and empirical methods, with several insights and algorithms implemented in industry practice and referenced by governmental agencies. His publications appear in premier journals including Management Science, Production and Operations Management, Operations Research, and Manufacturing & Service Operations Management. Key works include "Impact of OM Content in Earnings Calls on a Firm’s Stock Performance" (Management Science, forthcoming 2024), "It’s Not Simply Luck: The Impact of Schedule Padding and Operational Improvements on Domestic On-Time Performance in the US Airline Industry" (Production and Operations Management, 2023), "Operational Collaboration Between Rivals: The Impact of Cost Reduction" (Production and Operations Management, 2022), "Payment for Results: Funding Non-Profit Operations" (Production and Operations Management, 2021), and "Optimal Decentralization of Early Infant Diagnosis of HIV in Resource-Limited Settings" (Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, 2015). Among his honors are multiple Teacher of the Year Awards at ISB (2019, 2020, 2022, 2023), the INFORMS Aviation Application Section Best Dissertation Award (2003), George B. Dantzig Best Dissertation Award Honorable Mention (2003), and IBM Faculty Award (2013). He serves as Senior Editor for Production and Operations Management (Supply Chain Management and Nonprofit Operations Management sections) and Associate Editor for Management Science & Operations Management and Operations Research.
