Brings real-world insights to the classroom.
Min-Hyung Choi is a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Colorado Denver, where he has served since 1999, initially as an assistant professor and promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2006. He directs the Computer Graphics and VR Laboratory since 2000 and co-directs the Comcast Media and Technology Center since 2016. His distinguished academic background includes a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Iowa in 1999 with a dissertation titled “Geometry Awareness for Interactive Object Manipulation,” an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Iowa in 1996, an M.E. in Computer Engineering from Chung-Ang University in 1992, and a B.S. in Computer Science from Chung-Ang University in 1990.
Professor Choi's research focuses on computer graphics, virtual reality, augmented reality, deformable object simulation, 3D modeling and animation, game development, and biomedical applications such as neurocognitive assessment and breathing analysis. His work has been funded by the National Science Foundation, DARPA, Office of Naval Research, and National Institute of Justice, resulting in over 50 peer-reviewed publications. Notable publications include “Non-Contact Tidal Volume Measurement through Thin Medium Thermal Imaging” (Smart Health, 2018), “Volumetric Reconstruction of Thermal-Depth Fused 3D Models for Occluded Body Posture Estimation” (Smart Health, 2018), “Optimization of Material Properties for Coherent Behavior across Multi-Resolution Cloth Models” (KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Systems, 2018), and “Estimating Material Properties of Deformable Objects by Considering Global Object Behavior in Video Streams” (Journal of Multimedia Tools and Applications, 2014). He has received the NSF CAREER Award (2003), University of Colorado Denver Campus Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Activities (2006), Best Paper Award at IEEE BHI (2018), Outstanding Paper Award at ICONI (2017), and Best Paper Award at ACM MobiCom S3 Workshop (2016). Choi has advised multiple graduate students and held leadership positions including President of ACM SIGGRAPH Denver/Boulder Chapter (2001–2005) and Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association Colorado Chapter (2010–2011). In Fall 2024, he became Professor and Department Chair of Computer Science at Saint Louis University.
