Great Professor!
Professor Mitch Duncan is a Professor of Public Health in the School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Newcastle, Australia, within the College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing. Affiliated with the Priority Research Centre in Physical Activity and Nutrition, his academic qualifications include a PhD and a Bachelor of Health and Human Performance (Honours) from the University of Central Queensland, along with a Master of Medical Statistics from the University of Newcastle. Duncan's research focuses on behavioural epidemiology, health promotion, and preventative health care, particularly the joint and bidirectional influences of physical activity patterns—including moderate-to-vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity, muscle-strengthening exercise, sedentary behaviour, sitting time, and high-intensity interval training—and sleep characteristics such as duration, quality, variability in bed and wake times, snoring, and sleep hygiene on physical and mental health outcomes. These include obesity, cardiovascular disease risk, cardiometabolic markers, hypertension, diabetes prevention and management, weight loss, self-rated health, and all-cause mortality. He has pioneered digital health interventions using smartphones, wearable devices, m-health applications, e-health platforms, and web-based tools to promote multi-behaviour changes integrating physical activity, sleep, diet, and sedentary behaviour reduction, exemplified by projects like the REFRESH Study, WALK 2.0, Synergy Study, and the community-wide 10,000 Steps Australia initiative.
Duncan's career includes roles as Career Development Fellow in Population Health and Physical Activity, Research Fellow, and Senior Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Central Queensland University before his appointment as Professor at the University of Newcastle from December 2022, where he leads the Activity-Sleep Health Group. He has secured over $9 million in research funding, including an NHMRC Career Development Fellowship (2018–2022; $496,791) investigating physical activity and sleep as cardiovascular disease risk factors and an NHMRC Future Leader Fellowship (2014–2018; $520,000) for behaviour change interventions to reduce cardiovascular disease risk, contributing to larger projects exceeding $17.6 million via the Medical Research Future Fund. With over 170 peer-reviewed publications, key works include 'Effectiveness of a web- and mobile phone-based intervention to promote physical activity and healthy eating in middle-aged males: Randomized controlled trial of the manup study' (2014, Journal of Medical Internet Research), 'A systematic review and meta-analysis of cognitive and behavioral interventions to improve sleep health in adults without sleep disorders' (2018, Sleep Medicine Reviews), and 'Efficacy of an m-health physical activity and sleep health intervention for adults: a randomized waitlist-controlled trial' (2019, American Journal of Preventive Medicine). Duncan has supervised 16 research higher degree students and received honours such as National Heart Foundation Queensland Researcher of the Year and Australian Institute of Policy & Science Queensland Young Tall Poppy Award.
