About Monica

Monica Chadha is an Associate Professor (tenured) in the School of Journalism at The University of Arizona, where she joined in spring 2022 following her tenure as an associate professor at Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication from 2020 to 2021 and as an assistant professor there from 2014 to 2020. She earned her Ph.D. in Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin in 2020, M.Phil. in American Studies from Jawaharlal Nehru University, India in 2014, M.A. in Political Science from the University of Mumbai in 2005, and B.A. in Political Science and Sociology from the University of Mumbai in 2002. Earlier in her career, Chadha served as a News Correspondent for BBC World Service in India from 1999 to 2007, Features Writer for the Indian Express newspaper from 1998 to 1999, and held teaching and research assistant positions at the University of Texas at Austin.

Her research specializations encompass entrepreneurial journalism, identity construction and journalistic routines in digitally native news startups, news media entrepreneurship in stable and conflict zones, and the impact of revenue-sustainable measures on startup content. Key publications include "Media Entrepreneurship in Precarious Times: A Framework for Studying Factors Contributing to Resilience and Growth" (Journalism & Communication Monographs, 2025, with J.E. Relly), "News on TikTok Through the Lens of Quality Journalism: How TikTok Users Perceive News Values, Content and Engagement" (Journalism Studies, 2025, with Z. Cheng, L. Medina, and T. Durotoye), "Supporting Intercultural Experiences in Online Teaching during Wartime and Humanitarian Crises: Slack as a Learning Tool" (Journalism and Mass Communication Educator, 2024, with J.E. Relly), "An Examination of Affiliate and Network Television Channels’ Facebook Use for Addressing Audiences’ Critical Information Needs" (Electronic News, 2022, with K.H. Kwon and J.Y.
