Dr Monika Lukowska-Appel is a Lecturer in the School of Design and the Built Environment, Faculty of Humanities, at Curtin University in Perth, Australia. In her role, she delivers lectures in Design and coordinates the Master of Design program. Renowned as a printmaking artist, educator, and researcher, her practice uniquely blends digital technologies with traditional printmaking techniques. This fusion allows her to explore the transformative effects of technological advancements on artistic creation. Central to her work are themes of the materiality of place, ecological concerns, and the nuances of human experience, approached through innovative, experimental methods and site-specific responses in printmaking. Her artworks have garnered international recognition through various exhibitions and have been bolstered by multiple grants and awards, including her contribution to the team awarded the 2024 Global Impact Award at the Global Curtin Recognition Awards.
Beyond her academic duties, Dr Lukowska-Appel actively engages with the broader art community as the Western Australian representative for the Print Council of Australia, fostering connections and opportunities within the national printmaking scene. She has made significant contributions to scholarly discourse as co-editor of the 2023 Bloomsbury publication "The Politics of Artists in War Zones: Art in Conflict," collaborating with Kit Messham-Muir and Uroš Čvoro. Previously serving as Research Assistant for the 'Art in Conflict' project at Curtin University, she continues to participate in impactful initiatives such as the 'Art of Peace' project led by Professor Kit Messham-Muir. Her supervisory role is evident in student exhibitions like Master of Design – Studio X S1 and S2 2025, and Masters of Design 2024. Additionally, she has been involved in collaborative endeavors including the Seven Forms (Collie '22) exhibition, Project Groundswell, and events like the Ecologies of Imagination Micro Lab and A Celebration of Colour. Dr Lukowska-Appel has presented her work in forums such as the Showcasing Humanities Research video series, AAANZ 2025 Conference on Unruly Objects, and the Posthuman Pedagogies: Mindful Creativity in the Age of AI symposium in 2026.
