About Muhammad Jehangir

Dr. Muhammad Jehangir Khan serves as Associate Professor and Director of the Office of Research, Innovation, and Commercialization (ORIC) and the Center for Sustainable Futures (CSF) at the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE), Islamabad. He holds a PhD in Economics from Cardiff Business School, Cardiff University, United Kingdom (2013), an MSc in Quantitative Development Economics from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom (2006), an MA in Sociology from the University of Peshawar, Pakistan, an MSc (Hons) in Agricultural Economics from NWFP Agricultural University Peshawar (2003), and a BSc (Hons) in Agricultural Economics (2001). Khan joined PIDE as Research Economist in June 2005, was promoted to Assistant Professor in April 2014, and advanced to Associate Professor. Earlier roles include Teaching Assistant at Cardiff Business School, Junior Research Officer at the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (PARC), ARI Tarnab Peshawar (2007), and Research Fellow.

His research interests include development economics, impact evaluation, economics of education, health economics, and labor economics. Notable publications are 'Child education in the time of pandemic: Learning loss and dropout' (Children and Youth Services Review, 2021, with Junaid Ahmed), 'School Quality and Parental Schooling Decisions for Their Children: Public and Private Schools in Rural Pakistan' (The Pakistan Development Review, 2019), 'Impact of Credit on Education and Healthcare Spending in Rural Pakistan' (PDR, 2016, with Abid Hussain and Iftikhar Ahmad), 'Remittances and Healthcare Expenditures: Evidence from Pakistan' (PDR, 2021, with Karim Khan and Abid Hussain), 'Return to Education in Pakistan: A Brief Overview' (PIDE Working Paper, 2025), 'Parallel Education Streams In The Public Sector' (PIDE Research Report, 2022), and 'Finnish Miracle in Education: Lessons for Pakistan' (PIDE Knowledge Brief, 2022). He has conducted impact evaluations for the Federal Directorate of Education, FAO, ODI UK, and RASTA projects at PIDE, supervised MPhil theses, and taught Economics Theory and Practice. Awards include a PhD scholarship from Cardiff University, Commonwealth Alumni UK, and Bronze Medal for MSc Agricultural Economics.
