About Muhammad Kamran

Dr. Muhammad Kamran Malik serves as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Data Science in the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology at the University of the Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan, a position he has held since May 2023. Previously, he was Associate Professor at Punjab University College of Information Technology (PUCIT) from September 2020 to May 2023, Assistant Professor at PUCIT from October 2010 to August 2020, Associate Professor at the University of the Punjab Gujranwala Campus from August to September 2020, Assistant Professor at the Institute of Business and Information Technology from January to September 2010, and Assistant Manager at National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) from January 2006 to January 2010. He also served as Visiting Lecturer at PUCIT from April 2004 to June 2009. His academic background includes a PhD in Natural Language Processing from PUCIT, University of the Punjab, an MSc in Software Project Management with Silver Medal from National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences (FAST-NU), and an MSc in Computer Science from PUCIT.

Dr. Malik's research specializations encompass Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Data Science, sentiment analysis, named entity recognition, text analytics, and Urdu language processing for resource-poor languages. He has produced over 50 publications in leading journals and conferences, including 'Efficient CRNN: Towards end-to-end low resource Urdu text recognition using depthwise separable convolutions and gated recurrent units' in Information Processing & Management (2024), 'Emotion detection in code-mixed roman urdu-english text' in ACM Transactions on Asian and Low-Resource Language Information Processing (2023), 'MMU-OCR-21: Towards End-to-End Urdu Text Recognition Using Deep Learning' in IEEE Access (2021), and 'Hate-Speech Detection in Roman Urdu' in IEEE Access (2021). He was granted US Patent 9,619,555 for 'System and process for natural language processing and reporting' in 2017. Awards include the Silver Medal for his MSc and 100% marks in a Machine Learning course. Dr. Malik contributes as a reviewer for journals such as ACM TALLIP and IEEE Access, convener for the National Grassroots ICT Research Initiative, co-chair of IEEE ICACS, and member of numerous university committees including the PUCIT Research Advisory Committee, Board of Studies, and selection boards.
