Professor Mujib Rahman is a Professor in Civil Engineering and Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at Aston University, within the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences. He holds a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Nottingham awarded in 2004, an MSc in Civil Engineering Structures from City University London in 1998, and a BSc in Civil Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 1995. A Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (FICE), Fellow of the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (FCIHT), and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), Professor Rahman possesses over twenty years' experience in academia and industry. His professional journey commenced in 1999 as a research assistant at City University London, working on the European Commission-funded HEROIC project focused on hydro-erosion for in-situ concrete repair. From 2000 to 2003, he was a research assistant and then associate at the Nottingham Transportation Engineering Centre, University of Nottingham, where he completed his PhD research on the characterisation of dry process modified asphalt mixtures. Following his doctorate, he spent five years in industry, serving as Senior Pavement and Materials Engineer and project manager at Jacobs UK Ltd from 2003 to 2006, and later as senior researcher at TRL Limited on projects for Highways England and the Department for Transport.
At Aston University, Professor Rahman leads research into the characterisation of asphalt and concrete materials for pavement construction, non-destructive evaluation of infrastructures, protection of porous construction materials, and condition data analysis. He has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers, as well as two textbooks, including the second edition of 'Deterioration and Maintenance of Pavements' with David Cudworth. He has successfully supervised 15 PhD students to completion and is currently supervising eight others, many of whom hold faculty positions at universities worldwide. Professor Rahman chairs the Editorial Board of the ICE Transport journal, serves as Associate Editor for Advances in Materials Science and Engineering, and is an editorial board member for the International Journal of Pavement and the Journal of Advances in Civil and Environmental Engineering. In 2018, he received a Highly Commended Award for his paper on the remediation and protection of masonry structures. His contributions extend to knowledge transfer partnerships developing sustainable road surfacing materials and innovative pothole repair techniques.
