Gopinath Munisamy, Distinguished Professor of Agricultural Marketing in the Department of Agricultural & Applied Economics at the University of Georgia, specializes in international trade and investment, agricultural policy, productivity, economic development, and consumer demand. He holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural & Applied Economics from the University of Minnesota (1995), an M.Sc. in Agricultural Economics from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (1990), and a B.Sc. in Agricultural Sciences from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (1988). Currently affiliated with the Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development and serving as Faculty Fellow at the Center for International Trade and Security, Munisamy also held the position of Department Head from 2022 to 2023. His contributions in Business & Economics focus on agricultural markets and policy analysis.
Prior to joining UGA in 2019, where he was appointed Distinguished Professor in 2020, Munisamy directed the Market and Trade Economics Division at the USDA Economic Research Service from 2012 to 2019, overseeing programs including the 10-year USDA Baseline and World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates. He previously served as Professor at Oregon State University from 1997 to 2012, including as Director of the Applied Economics Graduate Program from 2008 to 2012. His honors include the Outstanding Alumni Award from the University of Minnesota Department of Applied Economics (2024), Best Journal Article Award from Research on World Agricultural Economy (2023), Chair of the Global Forum on Agriculture at the OECD (2016-2018), Outstanding Published Research Award from the Western Agricultural Economics Association (2009), and the Herald Jensen Award for Ph.D. Theses (1995). Munisamy has served as Managing Editor of Applied Economic Perspectives and Policy (2023-2024), on editorial boards for multiple journals, and in leadership roles for AAEA and IATRC.
