Rate My Professor Murat Uysal

Murat Uysal is Professor of Electrical Engineering in the Engineering Division at New York University Abu Dhabi, a position he assumed in September 2023. He also serves as Founding Director of the NYUAD Wireless Center since September 2025 and leads the Communication Theory and Technologies (CT&T) Research Lab. Previously, from 2011 to 2023, Uysal chaired the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and founded the Center of Excellence in Optical Wireless Communication Technologies (OKATEM) at Ozyegin University, Turkey. Earlier, at the University of Waterloo, Canada, he progressed from Assistant Professor in 2002 to Associate Professor with tenure in 2007. Uysal holds a BSc and MSc in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Istanbul Technical University (1995 and 1998) and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University (2001).

His research centers on communication theory, focusing on physical-layer design for wireless systems operating in radio and optical frequency bands, including free-space optical communications, visible light communications, terahertz communications, and beyond-5G technologies. Uysal has edited three books: Optical Wireless Communications – An Emerging Technology (Springer, 2016), Advanced Optical Wireless Communication Systems (Cambridge University Press, 2012), and Cooperative Communications for Improved Wireless Network Transmission: Frameworks for Virtual Antenna Array Applications (IGI Global, 2009). He has authored around 230 journal papers and 243 conference papers, accumulating over 25,000 citations with an h-index of 72 on Google Scholar. An IEEE Fellow since 2019 for contributions to cooperative and diversity techniques in wireless and optical communications, Uysal has earned major honors including the Mustafa Prize (2023), TÜBİTAK Science Award (2023), IEEE Communications Society Best Survey Paper Award (2019), Elginkan Foundation Technology Award (2018), NSERC Discovery Accelerator Award (2008), and Turkish Academy of Sciences Distinguished Young Scientist Award (2011). He is Area Editor for IEEE Transactions on Communications, has edited several IEEE journals, chaired the EU COST Action OPTICWISE (2011-2015) involving over 150 researchers, and served as Technical Program Committee Chair for IEEE conferences such as WCNC 2014, PIMRC 2019, and VTC-Fall 2019. Uysal was Chair of the IEEE Turkey Section from 2015 to 2019.
