About Myra

Myra Strober is a labor economist and Professor Emerita of Education at Stanford University's Graduate School of Education, as well as Professor Emerita of Economics (by courtesy) at the Graduate School of Business, contributing to the Business & Economics faculty. She earned a BS in industrial and labor relations from Cornell University in 1962, an MA in economics from Tufts University in 1965, and a PhD in economics from MIT in 1969. Strober joined Stanford in 1972, initially as Assistant Professor of Economics (by courtesy) at the Graduate School of Business and lecturer at the School of Education. She advanced to Professor of Education in 1978 and held numerous administrative roles, including Founding Director of the Stanford Center for Research on Women (now the Michelle R. Clayman Institute for Gender Research) from 1974-1976 and 1979-1984, Director of the Education Policy Institute from 1984-1986, Chair of the Program in Administration and Policy Analysis from 1991-1993, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs from 1993-1995, Acting Dean in 1994, and Director of the Joint Degree Program (MA Education/MBA) from 2002-2007. Prior to Stanford, she served as Lecturer at UC Berkeley (1970-1972) and Lecturer/Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland (1967-1970). She took a leave from Stanford (1998-2000) as Program Officer in Higher Education at Atlantic Philanthropic Services.

Strober's research focuses on gender issues in the workplace, work and family dynamics, occupational segregation, women in professions and management, economics of childcare, feminist economics, and the teaching of economics. She authored books including Sharing the Work: What My Family and Career Taught Me About Breaking Through (and Holding the Door Open for Others) (MIT Press, 2016), The Road Winds Uphill All the Way: Gender, Work, and Family in the United States and Japan (with Agnes Chan, MIT Press, 1999), and Interdisciplinary Conversations: Challenging Habits of Thought (Stanford University Press, 2010). Key articles include 'Wives' Labor Force Behavior and Family Consumption Patterns' (American Economic Review, 1977) and 'Women Economists: Career Aspirations, Education and Training' (American Economic Review, 1975). She served as President of the International Association for Feminist Economics (1996-1998), first Chair of the National Council for Research on Women (1982-1984), and Associate Editor of Feminist Economics (1994-2008). Strober received the Stanford School of Education Excellence in Teaching Awards (1992, 1998), Excellence in Education Award from Northern California NOW (2002), and Lifetime Achievement Award from the Stanford Faculty Women's Forum (2021). She consulted corporations on women in management and work-family issues and served as an expert witness in sex discrimination and sexual harassment cases.
