About Nadine

Professor Nadine Ezard is an Addiction Medicine Specialist (MBBS, BA, MPH, PhD, FAChAM) and Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), serving as the inaugural Director of the National Centre for Clinical Research on Emerging Drugs (NCCRED). She obtained her MBBS in Medicine and Surgery and BA in History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Melbourne, Master of Public Health from Harvard School of Public Health, and PhD in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. As a founding Fellow of the Australasian Chapter of Addiction Medicine of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, she brings over 30 years of clinical and research experience in addiction medicine and public health across Australia and international contexts. Her previous appointments include positions with the World Health Organization, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Since 2012, she has been Clinical Director of the Alcohol and Drug Service at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney, managing inpatient, outpatient, and community services for various substance use disorders and embedding innovative practices.

Professor Ezard's research centers on substance use disorders, with a focus on stimulants like methamphetamine, emerging drugs of concern, and harm-reduction interventions tailored to vulnerable populations such as refugees and displaced persons. She is recognized worldwide for translating research into public health policy, models of care, and consumer-focused interventions. She has produced extensive scholarly output, including over 120 journal articles, books, chapters, and reports. Key publications encompass "Challenges in maintaining treatment services for people who use drugs during the COVID-19 pandemic" (2020, Harm Reduction Journal), "Pharmacological treatment of methamphetamine/amphetamine dependence: a systematic review" (2020, CNS Drugs), "Evaluation of the Xpert HCV Viral Load point-of-care assay from venepuncture-collected and finger-stick capillary whole-blood samples: a cohort study" (2017, The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology), and "Six rapid assessments of alcohol and other substance use in populations displaced by conflict" (2011, Conflict and Health). Awards include the Australian Financial Review 100 Women of Influence (2016), Commonwealth Scholarships (2007-2011 and 2008), and Harkness Fellowship (1997-1998).
