Nancy F. Krebs, MD, MS, is a Distinguished Professor in Pediatrics-Nutrition at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, School of Medicine, where she also serves as Associate Vice Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Pediatrics. A leader in the field of Medicine with a focus on pediatric nutrition, she earned her Bachelor of Science from Iowa State University in 1973, Master of Science from the University of Maryland College Park in 1979, and Doctor of Medicine from the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine in 1987. She holds board certifications in Pediatric Clinical Nutrition since 1994, Pediatric Gastroenterology since 2001, and Pediatrics since 2014. Dr. Krebs directed the Section of Nutrition from 1998 to 2023 and is an Executive Committee member of the Colorado Nutrition Obesity Research Center.
Her research interests encompass maternal and infant nutrition, micronutrient homeostasis particularly zinc metabolism, complementary feeding, gut microbiota, and nutritional interventions in low- and middle-income countries, including the impacts of climate change. As principal investigator on numerous NIH-funded grants, such as the Global Network for Women’s and Children’s Health Research (UG1HD076474), she has led the Pediatric Nutrition Lab in conducting stable isotope tracer studies and large randomized controlled trials like the Women First preconception nutrition study across multiple countries. Key publications include "Prevention of pediatric overweight and obesity" (Pediatrics, 2003), "Assessment of child and adolescent overweight and obesity" (Pediatrics, 2007), "The importance of nutrition in pregnancy and lactation: lifelong consequences" (American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 2022), and "Biomarkers of Nutrition for Development—Zinc Review" (Journal of Nutrition, 2015).
Dr. Krebs has been recognized with major awards, including the 2024 Goalkeepers Champion by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the 2023 Jean-Pierre Habicht Lifetime Achievement in Global Nutrition Research Award from the American Society for Nutrition, the 2022 Agnes Higgins Award from March of Dimes, and ASN Fellow status in 2019. Her contributions extend to editorial roles, such as associate editor for nutrition articles in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, and committee service, including Co-Chair of the NIH/NICHD ADVANTAGE Work Group 1 on health effects of climate change.
