Natalia Tobin is a Lecturer in English in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, Faculty of Humanities, Arts, Social Sciences and Education, at the University of New England. She obtained her BA (Hons) and MA from the University of London and completed her PhD at Birkbeck College, University of London. Her doctoral thesis explores Jack Womack's science fiction through the philosophy of key thinkers. Tobin's professional career at the University of New England includes serving as Casual Lecturer in English from 2014 to 2021 before taking up her current position as Lecturer in English.
Tobin's research specializations and academic interests center on science fiction and fantasy, contemporary fiction, literary theory, comics and graphic novels, crime fiction, gothic and horror writing, and educational innovation. She has contributed to scholarly discourse with her publication “Tomorrow'll Be Yesterday Too Soon”: Speculative Nostalgia in Jack Womack's Elvissey, appearing in Science Fiction Studies, volume 48, part 1, March 2021. At UNE, Tobin coordinates and teaches a variety of units that reflect her expertise, including Science Fiction (ENGL506), Victorian Literature and Culture (ENGL351 and ENGL551), Reading Crime (ENGL384 and ENGL584), Graphic Novels as Literature (ENGL308 and ENGL508), Gothic Fiction (ENGL302 and ENGL502), Engaging with Literature (ENGL101), and Approaches to Literature and Society (ENGL102). She has also participated in public outreach, delivering a lecture on speculative fiction as an expert from the University of New England at Tamworth City Library.
