About Nathan

Nathan Brownlowe is an Associate Professor in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Sydney. He holds a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Newcastle, awarded in 2006, and a First Class Bachelor of Mathematics with Honours and the University Medal from the same institution, completed in 2001. Brownlowe previously served as Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney from 2019 to 2024, Scholarly Teaching Fellow there from 2017 to 2018, and held positions at the University of Wollongong including Senior Research Fellow, Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, and Research Fellow between 2008 and 2017. His research specializations focus on operator algebras, including C*-algebras associated with graphs, semigroups, inverse semigroups, groupoids, and dynamical systems. He has led and contributed to multiple Australian Research Council Discovery Projects, such as the 2025–2027 grant on twisted algebras for Zappa-Szép products and earlier projects on operator algebras and equilibrium states. Brownlowe supervises PhD students and has examined several higher degree research theses. His work contributes to advancements in functional analysis and noncommutative geometry through publications in peer-reviewed journals including International Mathematics Research Notices. As Summer School Director in the School of Mathematics and Statistics, he supports mathematical education and research training at the University of Sydney.
