Nestor Hilvano, MD, MPH, is a professor in Medicine with extensive experience in anatomy and physiology education. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from Far Eastern University-NRMF in the Philippines in 1984, a Master of Public Health from the University of the Philippines, and a B.S. in Medical Technology from Far Eastern University-NRMF. His career includes serving as Professor and Chair of the Anatomy Department for 19 years at Far Eastern University-NRMF Institute of Medicine and St. Luke's Medical Center College of Medicine, as well as Professor at OLFU College of Medicine. At the University of Cincinnati, he was Professor for 18 years, becoming Professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences at Clermont College on July 31, 2024. He also acted as Academic Coordinator, University Faculty Liaison for the Dual Enrollment Program, and Professor Affiliate of Pathophysiology for the UC College of Nursing's Doctor of Nurse Practice-Anesthesia program. Hilvano chaired multiple committees at UC Clermont College and the Science and Health Department, including College Academic Assessment, College Faculty Development, College Student Affairs, College Laboratory Safety, Science and Health Merit Pay, and Science and Health Faculty Searches.
His research specializations include neuroscience, focusing on localizing structures and neurochemical transmitters involved in somatosensory perception, and student learning and effective instructional strategies in anatomy and physiology. Key publications are "Effectiveness of computer assisted learning in anatomy and physiology" (The FASEB Journal, 2017), "Collaborative learning utilizing case-based problems" (Bioscene: Journal of College Biology Teaching, 2014), and "Explorative learning approach of problem-based research project, a pilot study in anatomy and physiology course" (The FASEB Journal, 2014). He published the book Applied Anatomy and Physiology: A Concise Text and Lab Manual (iBook, University of Cincinnati Clermont, 2017). Hilvano is a Fellow of the Anatomy Society and an active member of the American Association for Anatomy. In addition, he practices as a general medicine/family physician managing common and long-term illnesses and as an occupational health care physician focusing on work-related injuries and illnesses.
