Niall McGoldrick qualified with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Dundee in 2013. He completed foundation and core training across various dental specialties, including General Dental Practice, Paediatric Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Surgery, Restorative Dentistry, and Community Dentistry. During his final year of core training, he worked with the Scottish Dental Clinical Effectiveness Programme as the first Dental Core Trainee in Quality Improvement and Clinical Practice. In 2015, he became a Member by examination of the Faculty of Dental Surgery. McGoldrick completed higher specialty training in Dental Public Health with NHS Fife and NHS Lothian in July 2022, earning a Master of Dental Public Health with Distinction. He is a Fellow in Dental Public Health by examination of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. Appointed in August 2022 as Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Dental Public Health at the University of Dundee School of Dentistry, he leads the Dental Public Health Team, serves as Deputy Programme Lead for the Master in Dental Public Health programme, and holds an honorary consultant role with NHS Tayside, providing strategic advice on service evaluation, health improvement, and health protection in dentistry. He also offers clinical leadership for national oral health improvement programmes hosted at the university.
McGoldrick's research interests encompass early detection and prevention of oral cancer, inclusive oral health, epidemiology of cleft lip and palate, development of head and neck cancer research networks, and the role of mouth self-examination in oral cancer detection, which forms the focus of his PhD scholarship awarded in 2020. He leads projects such as Oral Health Improvement for People Who Use Drugs, co-designing research for national training and resources, Sustainable PPI in Oral and Dental Research, Improving Healthcare Pathways for People with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, and Let's Talk About Mouth Cancer. Key publications include 'Co-design of Health Educational Materials with People Experiencing Homelessness and Support Workers: A Scoping Review' (2024, Frontiers in Oral Health), 'Lessons Learned from Contact Tracing COVID-19 Cases in Dental Settings in East Scotland' (2024, Community Dental Health), and 'A Multi-Program Analysis of Cleft Lip with Cleft Palate Prevalence and Risk Factors in a High-Income Country' (2023, Birth Defects Research). His awards include Saltire Society 40 under 40 (2023), Top 20 Young Scot of the Year (2019), Scottish Health Awards Young Achiever (2017), Postgraduate Award for Best Voluntary Scheme in Oral Health (2015, Association of Dental Groups), Voluntary Service Award (2014, NHS Lothian), and The Ben Walton Trust Award (2013).
