Dr. Nicholas Bretland is a General Practitioner at Rowethorpe Medical Centre in Bentley, Western Australia, specializing in care for patients from aged-care facilities. In January 2013, Curtin University's Faculty of Health Sciences awarded him the title of Adjunct Senior Clinical Fellow for a three-year term, recognizing his significant record of public service, established professional reputation, and capacity to enhance teaching and research. As a past director of the Canning Division of General Practice, he brings extensive clinical expertise to his academic contributions.
Dr. Bretland collaborated with the Centre for Research on Ageing at Curtin University on studies focused on dementia care in residential facilities from 2009 to 2011. He co-authored key publications including 'Current experiences and educational preferences of general practitioners and staff caring for people with dementia living in residential facilities' (2009, International Psychogeriatrics), which identified educational needs; 'Dementia in residential care: education intervention trial (DIRECT)' (2010, BMC Geriatrics), outlining a cluster-randomized trial to improve quality of life through staff education; 'Development and evaluation of an educational intervention for general practitioners and staff caring for people with dementia living in residential facilities' (2010, International Psychogeriatrics), evaluating tailored programs; and 'Feedback on the Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Delirium in Older People in Australia' (2009). He delivered GP education sessions, served on steering committees, and participated in trials assessing quality of life factors. Additionally, Dr. Bretland provided expert input for Dementia Training Australia's resources on medications affecting cognition and management in older adults, and presented seminars through the Western Australian Dementia Training Study Centre in 2009 and 2012. His work advances evidence-based practices for elderly care, particularly dementia and delirium management.
