Helps students build confidence and skills.
Nicholas Chandler, BDS (Lond), MSc (Manc), PhD (Lond), LDSRCS (Eng), FDSRCPS (Glas), FDSRCS (Edin), FFDRCSI, serves as Honorary Professor in the Department of Oral Rehabilitation at the University of Otago Faculty of Dentistry in Dunedin, New Zealand. An endodontic specialist, he qualified at Guy's Hospital, London, and advanced through roles including Associate Professor before promotion to full Professor in 2016. His career focuses on endodontics, the discipline addressing diseases of the dental pulp and their management, often through root canal treatments. Chandler has contributed extensively to clinical education and simulation in dentistry, exploring student perceptions of teaching and self-confidence in endodontic procedures.
Chandler's research specializations include root canal fillings and posts using metals, carbon fibres, and tooth-coloured materials; pulp infections; root canal sealers; root end detection via radiographs and electronic apex locators; ultrasound applications for diagnosing dental disease; and laser Doppler blood flow methods for assessing pulp vitality. Key publications encompass highly cited reviews such as 'The smear layer in endodontics – a review' (2010, 1087 citations), 'Electronic apex locators' (2004, 666 citations), 'Endodontic implications of the maxillary sinus: a review' (2002, 439 citations), and 'Calcium hydroxide–based root canal sealers: a review' (2009, 433 citations). Additional works cover antimicrobial effects of irrigants (1998), pulp stones (2008), and recent studies on endodontic complexity assessment tools (2026), root canal treatment for older adults (2026), and marginal adaptation of root-end filling materials (2025). His contributions on pulp infections, sealers, and root detection have garnered over 5,000 citations, influencing endodontic practice globally. Chandler's experiments with precision instruments as small as 0.06 mm diameter have produced distinctive publications in the field.
