About Nicholas

Dr Nicholas Chartres is an Associate Professor in the School of Pharmacy at the Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Sydney. He holds a PhD and a Master of Human Nutrition. His research focuses on the commercial determinants of health, with particular emphasis on how corporations in the chemicals, fossil fuels, and nutrition industries influence scientific evidence and policy development. He serves as scientific lead of the Center to End Corporate Harm and is an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Public Health.

Chartres has led major systematic reviews, including a 2024 rapid systematic review published in Environmental Science & Technology examining the effects of microplastic exposure on human digestive, reproductive, and respiratory health. He has authored or co-authored publications in journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine and the Bulletin of the World Health Organization, addressing topics including ultra-processed foods, toxic chemicals, and the negotiation of international plastics treaties. His earlier work includes a 2019 dissertation on reducing bias in public health guidelines and foundational studies on industry sponsorship in nutrition research. He contributes to evidence synthesis and guideline development with organizations including the World Health Organization and participates in public science communication through media and policy forums.
