Professor Nicholas Goodwin serves as Conjoint Professor in the School of Medicine and Public Health within the College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing at the University of Newcastle. He is also the Director of the Central Coast Research Institute for Integrated Care, a joint initiative with the Central Coast Local Health District. Goodwin earned his PhD from the University of Southampton in 1994. Over the past 25 years, he has been a prominent figure in health services research, management, and policy, working across universities and the third sector. His early career included roles as Research Officer at The King’s Fund (1995-1998), Lecturer at the Health Services Management Centre, University of Birmingham (1998-2003), and Senior Lecturer at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (2004-2007), where he managed projects for the UK’s National Institute for Health Research and directed MSc and DrPH programs in public health management. From 2007 to 2013, as Senior Fellow at The King’s Fund, he led national investigations into general practice quality and telehealth applications, and spearheaded the organization’s integrated care program supporting the UK Department of Health’s strategy.
In 2011, Goodwin founded the International Foundation for Integrated Care (IFIC), serving as its CEO from 2013 to 2019, expanding it to over 30,000 members worldwide with initiatives in research, education, conferences, and policy support. He played a key role in developing the WHO Global Framework on People-Centred and Integrated Health Services Delivery, ratified by the World Health Assembly in 2016. Goodwin is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Integrated Care and has authored over 300 publications, including co-editing the Handbook of Integrated Care (second edition, 2021), What is Integrated Care? (2021), and Change Management (2021). Notable works also include It’s not what you do, it’s the way that you do it: Reducing the carbon footprint of healthcare through models of integrated care (2024) and Towards managed primary care: The role and experience of primary care organizations (2017). His contributions earned him the Avedis Donabedian International Award in 2016 and Fellowship of the Royal Geographical Society in 1994. Goodwin’s research interests include integrated care, primary care, leadership, policy, and population health. As a global consultant, he has advised organizations such as WHO, PAHO, and various national governments on integrated care implementation.
