Senior Lecturer Nick Hockley serves in the School of Medicine within the Faculty of Health at Deakin University, based at the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus. He possesses qualifications of Bachelor of Management with Honours (BMngt Hons) and Bachelor of Vision Science/Master of Optometry (BVis Sci/MOptom). As Clinical Director of the Deakin Collaborative Eye Care Clinic, Hockley manages the overall operations of the clinics located at Waurn Ponds and Lorne campuses. He is a lead advanced dry-eye clinician and lectures in optometric clinical skills. A long-standing and active member of the teaching and learning team in the School of Medicine's Optometry program, he delivers instruction across all four year cohort groups, contributing significantly to the education of future optometrists.
Hockley's research interests center on clinical trials of ocular surface disease. He co-authored the 2025 refereed journal article titled 'Exploring the Risk: Peripheral Retinal Degenerations in Young Australian Adults' with Natalie Watt and James Armitage, published as a C1.1 refereed article. The study examined the prevalence of peripheral retinal degenerations among young Australian adults and assessed whether axial length and refractive error could predict their occurrence. Furthermore, Hockley co-authored a public article in The Conversation in 2024, 'Could my glasses be making my eyesight worse?', alongside James Armitage, addressing common patient concerns regarding spectacle wear, adaptation to new prescriptions, lens cleanliness, and their impact on perceived vision quality. His work bridges clinical practice, teaching, and research in optometry at Deakin University.
