Nicolas Molfessis is Professor of Private Law in the Law faculty at Université Paris-Panthéon-Assas (Paris II). He earned his Agrégation in Private Law in 1994-1995 as valedictorian, a PhD in Private Law from Université Panthéon-Assas with honors including the Prix André Isoré de la Chancellerie des Universités de Paris, Prix Georges Ripert, Prix de thèse de l’Université Panthéon-Assas, and Prix de l’Association nationale des Docteurs en droit, as well as a scholarship from the French Ministry for Education and Research. He also holds a Master’s Degree in Political Sociology from SciencesPo Paris and a Master’s Degree in Private Law from Université Paris II. His academic career began as Professor of Law at Université de Tours from 1995 to 1998, followed by his appointment at Université Paris-Panthéon-Assas in 1998, where he teaches civil law including contracts and tort law to second- and third-year students, introduction to law and personal and property law to first-year students, maritime law at the master’s level, sociology of law, contracts and tort law in the Master’s in Private Law, and business contracts in the Master 2 Corporate and Tax Law program. He has supervised PhD students since 1995, directed the Master’s in Sociology of Law from 1999 to 2010, and served as Director of the Sociology of Law Laboratory from 1999 to 2008.
Molfessis’s research centers on private law, constitutional influences on private law, jurisprudence, legal sociology, and contract law. Key publications include Le Conseil constitutionnel et le droit privé (LGDJ, 1997), Les revirements de jurisprudence (Litec, 2005), Max Weber et la sociologie du droit (Dalloz, 2006), Sécurité juridique et initiative économique (Mare & Martin, 2015), and co-authorship of Introduction générale au droit with François Terré (Dalloz, annual editions through 2021). He is Scientific Director of La Semaine Juridique (JCP G), contributing bimonthly editorials, Co-Director of Pouvoirs, and member of the executive committees of Banque et droit and others. As Secretary-General of the Club des juristes, he led reports such as on civil procedure reform (2018). A France-designated ICSID Panel Arbitrator (2019-2025), he has chaired over 100 commercial arbitrations and participated in commissions including the PACS Reform (2004) and Working Group on Reversals of Case Law (2004). He serves as an independent board member of Groupe Les Echos and provides expertise in arbitration, mediation, and consultancy across sectors like energy, construction, and insurance.
