Rate My Professor Nicolas Harrand

Nicolas Harrand serves as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computer and Systems Sciences at Stockholm University. He earned his Ph.D. in software engineering from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, where his doctoral research centered on automatic software diversification. Before joining Stockholm University, he completed a postdoctoral position in the Cyber Security Unit at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden. Earlier in his career, Harrand worked as a research engineer at SINTEF ICT in Oslo, Norway, and pursued doctoral studies at INRIA Rennes in the DiverSE team in collaboration with Université de Rennes 1 in France. He obtained an engineering degree from Ensimag in Grenoble, France, and spent time as an exchange student at Politecnico di Torino in Italy.

Harrand's academic interests focus on software supply chain security, program transformations, software repositories, and both static and dynamic program analysis. His key publications include "A Comprehensive Study of Bloated Dependencies in the Maven Ecosystem" published in Empirical Software Engineering in 2021, "The Behavioral Diversity of Java JSON Libraries" presented at ISSRE in 2021, and "API Beauty is in the eye of the Clients: 2.2 Million Maven Dependencies reveal the Spectrum of Client-API Usages" appearing in the Journal of Systems and Software in 2021. Additional notable works encompass studies on Java bytecode decompilers, software diversity in Maven Central, and model-based approaches to engineering software diversity. Harrand has supervised multiple master's theses at KTH Royal Institute of Technology on topics related to software engineering and has contributed to projects such as Spoon for Java code analysis and ThingML for modeling heterogeneous systems. He has also taught courses including ethical hacking and various software verification topics.
