Dr. Nicole Jamison is a Lecturer in Early Childhood Education (Creative Arts and Play) in the Macquarie School of Education at Macquarie University. She serves as Course Director for the Early Childhood undergraduate and postgraduate Initial Teacher Education (ITE) degrees, including the BEd, BTeach, BABEd, and MTeach. Jamison is also an Assistant Director of the Centre for Research in Early Childhood Education and a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy (FHEA). She earned her PhD in Early Childhood Education from the University of Alberta between 2014 and 2022, during which time she held doctoral fellowships from the Alberta Teachers' Association and the University of Alberta itself.
Jamison's research specializations encompass arts-based research with children, with a focus on young immigrant and refugee children's everyday lives, experiences, and perspectives expressed through art and play. She is Primary Chief Investigator for the project "Exploring young immigrant and refugee children's experiences and perspectives through art and play" and co-leads "Supporting the creative arts in early childhood contexts" with Sarah Powell. Her key publications include "Arts-based research with children" (Early Childhood Education, 2015), "Playful art-making and a responsive adult to sustain interest and affirm minoritized children's experiences" (2025), "Following the lead of the child: pedagogical considerations to support responsive interactions in art experiences" (2024), and "Navigating cultural differences: a young newcomer child's expression through art" (2024). Additionally, Jamison contributes to the Early Childhood Educators' Wellbeing Project (ECEWP) team and teaches units such as Play Based Approaches to Early Childhood Education, Practice of Teaching: Outdoor Learning Environments, Families in Context, and Professional Experience 3. Her work emphasizes responsive pedagogy, creative arts integration, and play-based learning to foster children's wellbeing and cultural expression in early childhood settings.
