Dr. Nienke Hagedoorn is a postdoctoral researcher in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Otago, affiliated with the Centre for International Health and the Department of Paediatrics in Christchurch. Trained as a medical doctor in the Netherlands, she possesses clinical expertise in paediatrics, internal medicine, and public health. Hagedoorn earned her PhD from the Department of General Paediatrics at Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam in 2021. Her thesis, part of the EU-funded PERFORM project, addressed sepsis recognition and management, specifically improving diagnostic strategies and antibiotic treatment for febrile children in European emergency departments. She also holds a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology.
Relocating to New Zealand in 2022, she initially worked as a postdoctoral research fellow in the Departments of Primary Care and Paediatrics at the University of Otago, focusing on vaccine-preventable diseases and community antibiotic consumption. Since October 2022, she has contributed to the Centre for International Health, undertaking systematic reviews and meta-analyses on typhoid fever epidemiology under Professor John Crump. Her research interests center on clinical epidemiology of infectious diseases, invasive bacterial infections—including typhoid fever, non-typhoidal Salmonella, and leptospirosis—immunizations, and optimizing antibiotic prescriptions, with an emphasis on low- and middle-income countries. Notable publications include: Murthy et al. (2025) "Global typhoid fever incidence: An updated systematic review with meta-analysis" in The Lancet Infectious Diseases; Hagedoorn et al. (2024) "Global distribution of Leptospira serovar isolations and detections from animal host species: A systematic review and online database" in Tropical Medicine & International Health; Hagedoorn et al. (2024) "Prevalence and distribution of non-typhoidal Salmonella enterica serogroups and serovars isolated from normally sterile sites: A global systematic review" in Epidemiology & Infection; and Hagedoorn et al. (2023) "Comparison of clinical prediction rules in pre-school aged children with septic hip arthritis due to different pathogens" in Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics. Through collaborations in international consortia such as VACC-iNTS and PERFORM, her work advances global public health strategies.
