Associate Professor Nigel Barr serves as Discipline Lead for Paramedicine, Associate Professor in Paramedicine, and Program Coordinator for the Bachelor of Paramedicine in the School of Health at the University of the Sunshine Coast. He has worked in healthcare since 1988 as a registered paramedic and registered nurse with qualifications in critical care in both disciplines. Barr holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of the Sunshine Coast, Graduate Certificate in Professional Learning from the University of the Sunshine Coast, Graduate Certificate in Applied Statistics from Swinburne University of Technology, Graduate Diploma in Advanced Nursing Practice (ICU) from the University of Melbourne, Bachelor of Nursing from the University of Ballarat, Advanced Diploma of MICA Paramedicine Studies from Monash University, and Diploma of Health Science (Ambulance Officer) from the Ambulance Officer Training Centre Victoria.
Barr's research specializations encompass paramedicine, interprofessional education, infection prevention and control practices in paramedic-led healthcare, teaching and learning of paramedic science and clinical science, medical emergencies, clinical systems, and adaptation to climate change. He has an extensive publication record in peer-reviewed journals, including "Maintaining asepsis in paramedicine: a Delphi study" (2022), "Barriers to, and enablers of, paramedics responding to COVID-19" (2023), "Challenges for environmental hygiene practices in Australian paramedic-led health care: A brief report" (2018), "A qualitative exploration of infection prevention and control guidance for Australian paramedics" (2017), and "Self-reported behaviors and perceptions of Australian paramedics in relation to hand hygiene and gloving practices in paramedic-led health care" (2017). Barr has obtained funding through grants such as the 2018 University of the Sunshine Coast Commissioned Learning & Teaching Program Grant (A$30,000) for interprofessional education frameworks. He holds leadership positions including Treasurer of the Australasian Council of Paramedicine Deans and Queensland Representative for the Australian Vascular Access Society, and serves as a grant reviewer for the Emergency Medicine Foundation. His prior roles include membership on the UniSC Academic Board and student academic appeals committees. Barr's work has advanced paramedicine education, curriculum development, and clinical practices.
