Nik Florance is a Professional Practice Fellow in the Department of Surgery and Anaesthesia at the University of Otago, Wellington, within the Division of Health Sciences. As a registered nurse, he possesses a strong clinical background in renal nursing, orthopaedics, and intensive care. He holds a Bachelor of Nursing from Wellington Polytechnic and a Master of Health Care with Distinction, awarded by Victoria University of Wellington in 2019. The focus of his master's research was osteoporosis assessment and treatment in primary health care in Wellington. This work culminated in his thesis, 'An Exploration of Current Primary Health Care Practice Regarding Osteoporosis Assessment Following a Low Trauma Wrist Fracture in People Aged 50 Years and Above in Wellington, New Zealand: A Quantitative Survey,' which employed a quantitative survey methodology to examine practices following fragility fractures.
In his professional roles at Capital & Coast District Health Board, Florance serves as Speciality Clinical Nurse – Research in Orthopaedics and Acute Nurse Coordinator for Orthopaedics. He coordinates consultant- and registrar-led research projects in the orthopaedic department and facilitates care coordination for orthopaedic patients requiring acute surgery across Wellington Hospital and Kenepuru Hospital. Florance's academic interests and research specializations center on orthopaedics, osteoporosis care, and fragility fractures. He is committed to supporting medical and nursing staff in developing and executing research projects, contributing to advancements in these areas within clinical and academic settings at the University of Otago.
