Nina Hansopaheluwakan Edward is an Associate Professor in Design (Education Focused) and Academic Director (Curriculum Development) in the Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning at the University of Sydney. She joined the university in February 2024, having previously served as Senior Lecturer in Creative Digital Design at the University of Leeds School of Design from January 2021 to February 2024, where she also completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice in 2023. Holding a PhD, she teaches in the Master of Interaction Design program and focuses on curriculum innovation. As a member of the Civic and Social Design Research Group, her research interests include digital interactive design, semiotics, design education, human-centered design, and interdisciplinary studies. She currently leads efforts in a project exploring systemic barriers and inclusivity gaps affecting disabled individuals’ access to education, employment, and social participation in Indonesia, collaborating with therapists, families, community advocates, and government bodies to co-design inclusive strategies for policy, education, and community development.
Edward serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Information Design Journal, contributing to the advancement of the field through editorial leadership. She has engaged in public lectures, such as the IIID Conversation on information design. Her key publications encompass 'Embedding Social Justice into Design Pedagogy' with Anqi Rong (LearnXDesign 2025), 'Uncovering facilitators and constraints in co-design with visually impaired children: A sociomateriality perspective' (2025), 'Visualizing invisible information: a scoping review of present and future research directions' (2025), 'A bibliometric analysis of research trends and advanced technologies in tactile graphics design' (2025), 'Integrating artificial intelligence in design: An exploration' with Anqi Rong and Dian Li (Information Design Journal, 2024), and earlier works on AI-generated posters and online education in design disciplines. These contributions highlight her impact on inclusive design, sociomaterial approaches, and socially just pedagogy.
