About Niranjan

Niranjan Nagarajan is an Associate Professor in the School of Medicine and the Department of Computer Science at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He also serves as Associate Director and Senior Group Leader at the Genome Institute of Singapore, A*STAR. Nagarajan obtained a B.A. in Computer Science and Mathematics from Ohio Wesleyan University in 2000. He earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Cornell University in 2006, with his doctoral work supervised by Prof. Uri Keich. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at the University of Maryland, focusing on genome assembly and metagenomics under the supervision of Prof. Mihai Pop, before joining A*STAR as a principal investigator in 2009.

His research centers on developing advanced genome analytic tools to study microbial communities and their roles in human health, operating at the intersection of genetics, computer science, and microbiology through a systems biology approach to host-microbiome-pathogen interactions. Nagarajan has authored over 100 papers that have garnered more than 20,000 citations, with an h-index of 64. He has been recognized in multiple surveys of the world’s most-cited researchers in 2021, 2022, and 2023, and received the National Research Foundation Investigatorship from Singapore in 2024.
