Dr. Nirmala Wijekoon is a Senior Lecturer at Curtin Medical School within the Faculty of Health Sciences at Curtin University in Perth, Australia. She earned her MBBS from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka in 1997, followed by an MD in Medicine from the University of Colombo, MRCP (UK), FRCP (London), FRCP (Edinburgh), and FCCP (Sri Lanka). Prior to her current role, she served as Professor and Head of the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Faculty of Medical Sciences, Sri Lanka since May 2017, and previously as Associate Professor in Pharmacology at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura (October 2015 to May 2017) and the University of Kelaniya (November 2003 to October 2015). Her academic career encompasses clinical practice as a specialist physician in internal medicine alongside extensive teaching and research in pharmacology and medical education.
Dr. Wijekoon's research specializations include internal medicine, clinical pharmacology, cardiovascular epidemiology, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, stroke recovery, metabolic syndrome, and clinical pharmacy interventions. She has authored or co-authored over 50 publications, with key works such as 'Effects of MLC601 on early vascular events in patients after stroke: The CHIMES study' (2013, Stroke), 'CHInese medicine NeuroAiD efficacy on stroke recovery - Extension study (CHIMES-E): A multicenter study of long-term efficacy' (2015, Cerebrovascular Diseases), 'Ward-based clinical pharmacists and hospital readmission: a non-randomized controlled trial in Sri Lanka' (2018, Journal of Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics), 'Tolerability and effectiveness of every-other-day atorvastatin compared to daily atorvastatin in patients with muscle symptoms: A randomized controlled clinical trial' (2020, Therapeutic Advances in Drug Safety), and recent studies on COVID-19 clinical characteristics (2023-2024). Her work has garnered over 1,067 citations on Google Scholar, with an h-index of 14. She has received multiple honors, including two President's Awards for Scientific Research in Sri Lanka, and serves on the editorial team of the Asian Journal of Internal Medicine. Her contributions extend to international clinical trials and national medical committees in Sri Lanka.
