Nissa Hopkins is a tenured Professor of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) at Valencia College, East Campus. Having joined the institution in August 2011, she possesses extensive experience in teaching English to speakers of other languages (ESOL) and EAP, accumulating ten years prior to her arrival at Valencia, predominantly at Seminole State College where she taught for seven years. Hopkins earned her M.S. in TESOL/Education from Shenandoah University and her B.A. in Asian Studies from California State University, Sacramento. Her professional journey is distinguished by eight years of service in the U.S. Army, during which she worked as a linguist and Japanese interpreter. She completed an intensive Japanese language course at the prestigious Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, and earlier participated as an exchange student in Japan during high school. Extensive travels across various countries have further honed her appreciation for diverse cultures and languages, directly influencing her pedagogical approach in language instruction.
In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Hopkins holds several key administrative and leadership positions. She serves as the EAP Coordinator for Valencia College's East Campus, facilitates the Teaching and Learning Academy (TLA) for East Campus—guiding tenure candidates in research and professional development—and acts as the college's representative in the Florida statewide EAP Consortium. Furthermore, she contributes to the College Curriculum Committee and is the Communications Coordinator for Central Florida TESOL. She also maintains active involvement in professional organizations, enhancing her expertise and network in the TESOL community. Through these roles, Hopkins significantly impacts curriculum development, faculty training, and statewide initiatives in English language education. Her commitment to the field is underscored by her multifaceted contributions to both institutional and professional communities, supporting the academic success of non-native English speakers and advancing best practices in TESOL and EAP instruction.
