Oliver Lyons, MB BS, PhD (Lond), FRCS, serves as Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery and Critical Care, Christchurch, at the University of Otago within the Faculty of Medicine, Division of Health Sciences. A specialist in vascular endovascular and renal transplantation surgery at Christchurch Public Hospital, he teaches and examines trainee interns and fourth-year medical students in clinical procedures for vascular disease. Lyons obtained his MB BS from City St George's, University of London between 2000 and 2006, completed his PhD at King's College London in 2015, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons.
Prior to his appointment at Otago in 2021, Lyons held positions as NIHR Clinical Academic Lecturer from 2014 to 2023 and MRC Clinical Research Fellow from 2010 to 2013 in the Academic Department of Surgery at King's College London, concurrent with his role as Vascular Registrar at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. His research centers on randomised trials to mitigate stroke risk in aortic surgery, outcomes of vascular and endovascular procedures, and vascular infections, with emphasis on aortic graft and endograft infections, abdominal aortic aneurysms in women, and socioeconomic factors influencing aneurysm rupture. Key publications include 'Outcomes of aortic graft and endograft infection using MAGIC diagnostic criteria: Recommendations for follow up' (2026, European Journal of Vascular & Endovascular Surgery), 'Abdominal aortic aneurysm in women in Aotearoa New Zealand' (2025, New Zealand Medical Journal), 'Socioeconomic determinants of abdominal aortic aneurysm rupture incidence: A nationwide geospatial study' (2025, European Journal of Vascular & Endovascular Surgery), 'Osteoporosis risk scores to predict increased levels of care in older patients undergoing vascular surgery' (2025, ANZ Journal of Surgery), and 'Vascular Graft and Endograft Infections: A Delphi Consensus Document on Terminology, Definitions, Treatment, Outcomes, Follow Up, and Reporting Standards' (2025). With 148 publications and over 2,800 citations, Lyons exerts considerable influence in vascular surgery. He holds the role of Section Editor for the European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, received the Hunterian Professorship from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2022, and has obtained grants from the Health Research Council of New Zealand.
