Dr. Owen Hogan is a Senior Lecturer in Strategy, Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Faculty of Business, Law and Arts at Southern Cross University. He earned a Bachelor of Business from the University of Newcastle, a Bachelor of Contemporary Music from Southern Cross University, and a PhD from Southern Cross University in 2021 for his thesis titled 'The future of Australian business schools: theory, evidence and policy.' His research sits at the intersection of circular economy transitions, regenerative business models, and applied innovation, with a strong focus on real-world impact through waste valorisation, bioeconomy innovation, and circular design. Hogan is a member of Southern Cross University's ZeroWaste and Harvest to Health research clusters. He works closely with industry, government, and international partners on applied projects, including 'Diverting plastics from landfill' (final report, 2023, with Lachlan Yee) and investigations into black soldier fly farms for plastic degradation and waste management. He has also contributed to discussions on circular practices for small businesses and the meat industry.
Hogan has published extensively in entrepreneurship, sustainability, higher education, public management, and strategy. Key publications include 'Business education in Australia: COVID-19 and beyond' (2021, with Michael B. Charles and Michael A. Kortt), 'A View From The Top: Deans on Australian Business Schools' (2021, with Michael B. Charles and Michael A. Kortt), 'The rise and fall of the Australian DBA' (2016, with Michael A. Kortt and Simon J. Pervan), 'An Empirical Analysis of International Migrant Business Ownership and Employment in Regional Australia' (2022, with Michael A. Kortt and Brian Dollery), 'The market orientation of Australian nonprofit SMEs' (2015, with Simon J. Wilde, Pat Gillett, and David M. Herold), and 'The Market's Filthy Lesson: Disruption for Business and Management Education in Australian Public Universities' (2023). He has secured competitive and industry-linked research funding, including an AMPC industry grant, and led projects on circular economy applications. In teaching, Hogan is involved in curriculum innovation, industry-engaged programs, and serves as MBA Director. He brings extensive professional experience from the creative industries, agriculture, and public sector, and engages in public outreach through webinars, podcasts, and SCU Buzz episodes on topics like rethinking plastics and starting health practices.
