Paddy Holbrook is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Department of Nursing at the University of Otago, Christchurch, affiliated with the Faculty of Health Professional Programmes within the Health Sciences Division. She holds a Master of Nursing (MN), a Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Nursing Practice with Distinction (PGDipProfNursPrac (Dist)), is a Registered Nurse (RN), and is qualified as a Nurse Practitioner (NP). With extensive clinical experience as an Emergency Department Nurse Practitioner, Holbrook has worked in large tertiary Emergency Departments. There, she was integral to the introduction of advanced nursing roles and the establishment of Nurse Practitioner positions, contributing significantly to the evolution of nursing practice in high-acuity settings.
Her academic interests center on the development of advanced nursing skills and practice, with a particular emphasis on preparing nurses for the Nurse Practitioner role and providing support and guidance for the expansion of these roles. In her teaching portfolio at the University of Otago, Holbrook serves as the Convenor for NURS411 Nursing - Critical Care & High Acuity. She is the Secondary Convenor for NURS435 Evidence Based Nursing Practice, where she has assisted and convened parts of the course. Additionally, she assists with the delivery and course content of NURS405 Health Assessment and Advanced Nursing Practice. Holbrook also acts as the Academic Liaison for Master of Science students and the Prescribing Practicum, and she is involved in marking, moderation, and Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs). Holbrook has contributed to the nursing literature through a series of practical articles in Emergency Nurse New Zealand magazine under the title "NP tips, tricks and trips." These include the July 2023 issue (Volume 23, Issue 3, pages 38-40), March 2024 issue (Volume 24, Issue 1, pages 29-30), November 2024 issue (Volume 24, Issue 2, page 28), and March 2025 issue (Volume 25, Issue 1, page 24). These publications offer valuable insights for nurse practitioners in emergency settings.
