Dr. Pallab Biswas is a Lecturer in the Department of Accountancy and Finance at the Otago Business School, University of Otago, a position he has held since February 2016. He obtained his PhD in Accounting and Finance from the University of Western Australia in 2013 and an MBA in Accounting from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. His academic work centers on empirical studies in accounting and finance, particularly examining governance structures and their effects on organizational performance and social responsibility.
Biswas's research specializations include corporate governance, sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR), board composition and gender diversity, earnings management, firm performance, dividend policy, cost of debt, CSR disclosure, firm risk, and financial statement comparability. He has published in prominent journals such as Pacific Accounting Review, Accounting & Finance, Journal of Business Ethics, and Human Resource Management. Notable publications are 'Board composition, sustainability committee and corporate social and environmental performance in Australia' (Biswas, Mansi, & Pandey, 2018), 'Real earnings management: A review of the international literature' (Habib et al., 2022), 'Female directors on the board and cost of debt: evidence from Australia' (Pandey, Biswas, Ali, & Mansi, 2020), 'Board gender diversity and women in senior management' (Biswas, Chapple, Roberts, & Stainback, 2023), 'Does women's board representation affect non-managerial gender inequality?' (Biswas, Roberts, & Stainback, 2021), and 'The impact of family vs non-family governance contingencies on CSR reporting in Bangladesh' (Biswas, Roberts, & Whiting, 2019). His studies highlight the role of board gender diversity in mitigating gender inequality in management and improving CSR outcomes, especially in Australia and emerging markets. Biswas supervises PhD theses on charity accounting, corporate social disclosures, and board gender diversity in UK private firms.
