Pamela Adkins, DVM, MS, PhD, DACVIM-Large Animal Internal Medicine, serves as Associate Professor of Food Animal Medicine and Surgery in the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine. She earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from The Ohio State University and both her Master of Science and PhD from the University of Missouri. Board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in Large Animal Internal Medicine, Dr. Adkins focuses her clinical practice on food animal internal medicine. Her research centers on bovine mastitis and the molecular epidemiology of infectious diseases, contributing to advancements in dairy cattle health, pathogen identification, and antimicrobial resistance. She has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, with key works including "Evaluation of MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and a custom database for direct identification of individual species within the Staphylococcus chromogenes clade from bovine milk cultures" (Journal of Dairy Science, 2018), "A systematic review of the utility of biomarkers as aids to diagnosis of clinical mastitis in dairy cows" (Journal of Veterinary Diagnostic Investigation, 2022), and "Staphylococci and mammaliicocci: Which species are associated with mastitis?" (Journal of Dairy Science, 2025). Her scholarly output has garnered over 950 citations, underscoring her influence in veterinary microbiology and food animal production medicine.
Dr. Adkins joined the University of Missouri faculty in 2015 and earned promotion to associate professor with tenure effective September 1, 2024. She holds leadership roles as co-director of the Veterinary Research Scholars Program, Assistant Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station, Chair of the Faculty Advisory Committee, and a member of the Promotion and Tenure Committee. Additionally, she contributes to graduate faculty mentoring, continuing education for food animal veterinarians, and clinical services at the Food Animal Hospital. Her involvement in One Health initiatives highlights interdisciplinary impacts on public health and animal agriculture.
