Dr. Paul Baker serves as the Director of the English Language Centre – Te Puna o te Kī at the University of Otago, a role he assumed in 2021. He completed his Bachelor of Arts with Honours (BA Hons) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at the University of Otago in 1995. His doctoral thesis, titled A Question of Conscience: The Dramas of Fritz Hochwälder, was a study conducted in the Department of German and later published by the department in 2001. In addition to his academic degrees from Otago, Baker holds the International Diploma in Language Teaching Management (IDLTM) awarded by Cambridge ESOL and the University of Queensland. These qualifications underpin his extensive expertise in language education.
Paul Baker has built a distinguished career spanning more than 25 years in teaching English to speakers of other languages, primarily within the University of Otago. Beginning post-doctorate, he progressed through key positions including tutor, lecturer, academic coordinator, academic manager, Assistant Head of Studies, and Head of Academic Programmes. Appointed Academic Manager of the University of Otago Language Centre in 2010, he took responsibility for the overall operation, management, and quality assurance of all programmes offered by the centre. Under his leadership as Director, the English Language Centre delivers a comprehensive suite of English-language programmes, both face-to-face on campus in Dunedin and online. Notable offerings include the English for Otago pathway programme, specifically designed to equip international students with the linguistic proficiency required for direct entry into undergraduate and postgraduate degree studies at the University of Otago. The centre also provides shorter-term, customised programmes for international partners, fostering global educational collaborations and supporting diverse learner needs.
