Paul Bunn, MD, is Distinguished Professor of Medicine in the Division of Medical Oncology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Anschutz Medical Campus, and holds the James Dudley Endowed Chair in Lung Cancer Research. In Medicine, he has dedicated his career to advancing thoracic oncology, particularly through clinical trials of novel molecular targeted therapies and immunotherapies for lung cancer and other thoracic cancers. He earned a BA cum laude from Amherst College in 1967 and an MD from Weill Cornell Medical College in 1971. Bunn completed his medical internship and internal medicine residency at the University of California, San Francisco in 1972 and 1973, respectively, followed by a fellowship in medical oncology at the National Cancer Institute in 1975. Board certified in internal medicine in 1974 and medical oncology in 1975 and 1976, his early career at the NCI from 1973 to 1984 included roles as Clinical Associate, Senior Investigator, and Head of the Cell Kinetic Section.
Recruited to the University of Colorado in 1984, Bunn served as Head of the Division of Medical Oncology until 1994 and Director of the University of Colorado Cancer Center from 1987 to 2009. He was Acting Chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology from 1996 to 1999, Acting Division Head of Medical Oncology from 2004 to 2006, and Executive Director of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer from 2003 to 2013. Appointed Professor of Medicine in 1984, James Dudley Endowed Professor of Lung Cancer in 2006, and Distinguished Professor in 2013, he has authored over 280 peer-reviewed publications. Key works include "Molecular predictors of outcome with gefitinib in a phase III placebo-controlled study in advanced non-small-cell lung cancer" (Journal of Clinical Oncology, 2006) and "Epidermal growth factor receptor gene and protein and gefitinib sensitivity in non-small-cell lung cancer" (Journal of the National Cancer Institute, 2005). Bunn's honors include the ASCO David A. Karnofsky Memorial Award (2016), Giants in Cancer Care Award (2014 and 2016), IASLC Merit Award (2003), AAAS Fellow (2006), and America's Top Doctors for Cancer (2005-present).
