Paul Massy serves as Faculty Development Coach in PBSC Online & International Education at Palm Beach State College, within the field of Education. In 2023, he earned a nationally recognized credential in online teaching excellence from the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE), co-endorsed by the American Council on Education (ACE). This achievement came from completing the ACUE Effective Online Teaching Practices course, which includes 25 modules based on evidence-based practices aligned with research in cognition and adult learning. Key areas covered encompass designing effective online courses, creating productive learning environments, applying active learning techniques, promoting higher-order thinking, and using assessments to inform instruction. Massy applied these practices directly in his courses at the college and was recognized at a pinning ceremony on January 26, 2024.
Massy earned his Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Florida Atlantic University in Fall 2023. His dissertation, “Panyard Steelpan Experiences Impact on Secondary School Teachers’ Pedagogical Practices: A Case Study,” examined the influence of steelpan music experiences on teaching methods, under the advisement of Bianca Nightengale-Lee, Ph.D. Bringing over 20 years of experience in higher education leadership and innovation, Massy has contributed as a Graduate Teaching Assistant and Adjunct faculty in Curriculum, Culture, and Educational Inquiry at FAU. His academic interests include effective instructional strategies, curriculum design, assessment methods, critical and responsive pedagogies, postsecondary music education, and culturally sustaining practices from an asset-based perspective. Notable publications feature “Pedagogical practices, curriculum development, and student experiences within postsecondary music education: A systematic literature review” co-authored with S.F. Sembiante in Research Studies in Music Education (2023), “Putting Black Boys’ Literacies First” with B. Nightengale-Lee and B. Knowles in Journal of Literacy Innovation (2021), and “Free Verse: Integrating Spoken Word in Counseling with Youth of Color” (2022). He has also presented at the 2023 AERA Annual Meeting. Awards include the 2021 Dean’s Award, 2022 Dr. Rosanna Gatens Award for Outstanding Community Service, and 2023 Alumni Association Endowment Scholarship.
