Paul Samson is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery and Critical Care (Dunedin) at the University of Otago. He earned his MB ChB and BSc (Hons) from the University of Otago, graduating in 1999. Following medical school, he worked as a junior doctor at Southland Hospital, then completed specialist general surgical training in New Zealand's major metropolitan hospitals. Samson undertook a fellowship in Breast and Endocrine Surgery at North Shore Hospital, Auckland, before returning to Southland Hospital in 2010 as a Consultant General Surgeon practicing in both public and private sectors in Invercargill. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons since 2009 and holds memberships in the Breast Surgeons Society of Australia and New Zealand, the Australasian Society for Breast Disease, and the New Zealand Association of General Surgeons. Accredited for endoscopy and colonoscopy by the New Zealand Conjoint Committee for Recognition of Training in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Samson contributes to undergraduate medical education at all levels and postgraduate training positions in general surgery through the University of Otago's General Surgery section, which provides acute and elective services including breast and endocrine surgery.
Samson's clinical expertise spans general surgery with sub-specialties in breast, endocrine, melanoma, and endoscopic surgery. He serves on the medical committee of Breast Cancer Foundation New Zealand. His research in surgery and medicine is evidenced by multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals.
