Professor Paula Brough is a Professor of Organisational Psychology in the School of Applied Psychology at Griffith University, serving as Director of the Centre for Work, Organisation and Wellbeing. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology from the University of Bristol, a Master of Science in Applied Psychology from Cranfield University, and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from Bangor University. Throughout her career at Griffith University, spanning over 20 years, Professor Brough has dedicated her research to evaluating and enhancing the psychological health of workers, particularly in high-risk occupations such as police, corrections officers, and fire services.
Her primary research specializations include occupational stress and coping mechanisms, employee mental health and wellbeing, work engagement, work-life balance, workplace conflict encompassing bullying, harassment, and toxic leadership, as well as the broader psychosocial work environment. Professor Brough has edited the book Wellbeing at work in a turbulent era and co-authored highly influential papers such as 'Work–life balance: A review of the meaning of the balance construct' (2008). With over 19,493 citations on Google Scholar, her scholarship has made substantial contributions to organisational psychology, informing evidence-based interventions for occupational health. She received the Excellence in Research Leadership award from Griffith Business School in 2023 and has secured funding through initiatives like the Queensland Smart State Senior Researcher grant. Her work extends to practical applications, including studies on stress contagion, remote work impacts during COVID-19, and nature-based therapies for mental health.
