Pauline Costins is a University Lecturer in the School of Nursing at Curtin University, where she serves as the Course Coordinator for the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery. She is a registered nurse and endorsed midwife, as well as a non-practicing lawyer who has completed a Master's in Health Law. Costins teaches midwifery and professional issues on a part-time basis, bringing her interdisciplinary expertise to the education of future midwives. Her involvement extends to courses such as Principles of Pharmacology and Prescribing, demonstrating her broad contributions to health sciences education.
Costins's research centers on midwifery education and the philosophy of being 'with woman' in clinical and educational settings. Key publications include 'Midwifery students': Developing an understanding of being 'with woman': A qualitative study' (Midwifery, 2020, co-authored with Lesley Kuliukas, Zoe Bradfield, Ravani Duggan, Virginia Burns, Yvonne Hauck, and Lucy Lewis), which examines midwifery students' experiential learning. Other notable works are 'Urgency to build a connection: Midwives' experiences of being 'with woman' in a model where midwives are unknown to women' (Nurse Education in Practice, 2019), 'Continuity or team-teaching approach for midwifery education? An exploratory qualitative study of student and academic preferences' (2022), and 'Online portfolio for midwifery student assessment and recording of clinical experience' (Women and Birth, 2018). She is also a contributor to the textbook Midwifery (1st Edition, 2025). Costins is a Fellow and Life Member of the Australian College of Midwives, recognizing her standing in the field.
