Penelope Coutas serves as Lecturer in Languages Education at Murdoch University within the School of Education, while also teaching Indonesian Language at Como Secondary College. She earned a Bachelor of Asian Studies from Murdoch University and is a Doctor of Education (EdD) candidate there, supervised by Lindy Norris and Dorit Maor. Her academic interests encompass the teaching of foreign languages, computer-assisted language learning (CALL), digital ethnography, educational technology, and Indonesian language pedagogy. Coutas investigates the application of ICTs in language classrooms, addressing challenges like the marginalization of languages in Australian schools despite technological advances.
Her scholarly contributions include co-authoring the BIMA Level 1 Indonesian language resources: Student Book (2019, Cengage), Workbook (2019), and Teacher Toolkit (2020), alongside Michelle Kohler, Brent Bloffwitch, Erin McMahon, and Kate Reitzenstein. Prominent publications feature "Fame, Fortune, Fantasi: Indonesian Idol and the New Celebrity" (2006, Asian Journal of Communication; 2008 book chapter), analyzing Indonesian celebrity culture, and "Cinderella’s Coach or Just Another Pumpkin? Information Communication Technologies and the Continuing Marginalisation of Languages in Australian Schools" (2014, with Lindy Norris, Australian Review of Applied Linguistics).
