Dr Per Henningsgaard is a Senior Lecturer in Professional Writing and Publishing in the Faculty of Humanities at Curtin University, where he serves as Major Lead and Coordinator for the Professional Writing and Publishing major in the School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry. Born and raised in the American Midwest, bouncing between farms and small towns, he earned his BA from Vassar College in upstate New York and his PhD from the University of Western Australia in 2009. A Fulbright Scholar in 2005, Henningsgaard conducted research on publishing during a twelve-month placement at Longman Publishers in New York. Before joining Curtin in 2017, he held assistant professorships at Portland State University from 2012 to 2017 and at the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point from 2009 to 2012. He possesses extensive industry experience in trade and educational publishing, including in-house roles and freelance editing, and is an accredited editor with the Institute of Professional Editors (IPEd).
Henningsgaard's research specializations encompass publishing studies, book history, Australian literature, Australian studies, and regional literature. He has authored or co-authored more than 20 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters published across six countries, with notable works including 'Mapping Print, Connecting Cultures' (2016, with S. Burrows, J. Ensor, V. Hiribarren; 16 citations), 'Not your average reader: Interviewing literary agents, editors, and publishers' (2019; 7 citations), 'Types of publishing houses' (2020; 7 citations), 'Outside traditional book publishing centres: the production of a regional literature in Western Australia' (2008; 7 citations), and 'Publishing translated books for young readers in Australia' (2021, with M.C. de Vicente Capua; 4 citations). His publications have garnered 83 citations on Google Scholar. In recognition of his teaching excellence, he received the Curtin University Excellence in Teaching Award as winner for the Faculty of Humanities in 2021. At Curtin, he launched a student-powered publishing press, offering practical industry experience. He also serves on the board of Writing WA, recently elected as Chair.
