Perminder Sachdev AM, MBBS, MD, PhD, FRANZCP, FAAHMS, is Scientia Professor of Neuropsychiatry in the School of Clinical Medicine at the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney), within the Faculty of Medicine & Health. He graduated from the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, with an MBBS in 1978 and an MD in Psychiatry in 1983. After migrating to New Zealand and then Australia, he completed his PhD in 1991 on ethnopsychological concepts in Maori culture. His career includes serving as head and Clinical Director of the Neuropsychiatric Institute at Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney. He is Co-Director of the Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing (CHeBA) at UNSW Sydney, Research Director of the Neuropsychiatric Institute, deputy chair of the Australian Dementia Network (ADNeT), and Director of the Centre of Research Excellence in Vascular Contributions to Dementia. Sachdev has held leadership roles such as past-President of the International Neuropsychiatric Association, inaugural Chair of the Section of Neuropsychiatry of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, and past-President of the International College of Geriatric Psychoneuropharmacology. He leads major longitudinal studies including the Sydney Memory and Ageing Study, Older Australian Twins Study, and Sydney Centenarian Study, as well as international consortia such as COSMIC, STROKOG, and ICC-Dementia.
Sachdev's research specializations encompass dementia and pre-dementia syndromes, focusing on neuroimaging, neuropsychology, biomarkers, and risk factors; drug-induced movement disorders such as akathisia, tardive dyskinesia, and neuroleptic malignant syndrome; brain stimulation techniques including TMS, tDCS, VNS, and DBS for psychiatric disorders; cognitive ageing; vascular cognitive disorders; and neuropsychiatric symptoms in dementia. He has authored 5 books including The Yipping Tiger and Other Tales from the Neuropsychiatric Clinic (2009), Secondary Schizophrenia (2010), and A Migrant's Musings and Other Offerings to an Adopted Land (2017); 3 edited books; 57 book chapters; and over 600 peer-reviewed papers. His work has an h-index of 90 and over 29,000 citations on Google Scholar. Major awards include NSW Scientist of the Year for Biomedical Sciences (2010), Member of the Order of Australia (2011), Founder's Medal from the Australian Society for Psychiatric Research (2011), International Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (2012), UNSW Medicine Dean’s Award (2014), and Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (2015).
