About Peter

Peter Adamczyk is the Mead Witter Foundation Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Engineering. He earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in 2002, an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan in 2003, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan in 2008. Adamczyk joined the University of Wisconsin-Madison as an Assistant Professor in Mechanical Engineering in 2015 and advanced to the position of Associate Professor. He is also affiliated with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Dr. Adamczyk directs the UW Biomechatronics, Assistive Devices, Gait Engineering and Rehabilitation Laboratory (UW BADGER Lab). His research specializations include biomechanics of human walking, powered prosthetic and orthotic devices for lower limbs, rehabilitation robotics, wearable robots for mobility assistance, and human-robot interaction. With over 4,800 citations on Google Scholar, his work has significant impact in rehabilitation engineering and lower-limb prosthetics. Key publications comprise 'Measurement of foot placement and its variability with inertial sensors' (Gait & Posture, 2013), 'Wearable sensing for understanding and influencing human movement in ecological contexts' (Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation, 2023), 'Design and Validation of a Lower-Limb Haptic Rehabilitation Robot' (Frontiers in Neurorobotics, 2020), 'Detecting Toe-Off and Initial Contact in Real-Time With Self-Supervised Inertial Sensors' (Journal of Biomechanical Engineering, 2024), and 'A Computational Gait Model With a Below-Knee Amputation and a Powered Ankle Prosthesis' (Annals of Biomedical Engineering, 2023). Among his honors, Adamczyk received the Founders' Award from the American Society of Biomechanics in 2025 and was named a U.S. Fulbright Scholar. He has delivered public lectures through Badger Talks at the university.
