Professor Peter Carroll serves as an Honorary Professor of Pharmacology in the Faculty of Medicine and Health, School of Pharmacy at the University of Sydney. He holds an MSc and PhD, and is a Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (FPS) and Fellow of the Australian College of Pharmacy Practice (FACP). With over 50 years in pharmacy, Carroll has worked in hospital pharmacy, the pharmaceutical industry in medical and marketing roles, and currently practices in community pharmacy. He teaches Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics to medical, nursing, and pharmacy students at the University of Sydney and is Chairperson of the Editorial Board of the Australian Journal of Pharmacy. Previously Head of Pharmacology in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Sydney, he also holds the position of Professor and Head of Pharmacology in the School of Medicine at the University of Notre Dame Australia, Sydney, and Honorary Professor in Clinical Pharmacology at the Northern Clinical School, Royal North Shore Hospital.
Carroll has made substantial contributions to pharmacy practice and education in Australia, particularly in New South Wales. He developed the Asthma Card to aid pharmacists in counseling patients on asthma management and overuse of reliever medications, initiated training for pharmacists to conduct Medication Reviews, and pioneered accredited vaccination training courses for pharmacy students and professionals. He personally trained over 250 pharmacists to administer influenza vaccines and played a pivotal role in obtaining government approvals for pharmacists to deliver MMR, DPT, and COVID-19 vaccines. As President of the New South Wales Branch of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia, former PSA National Board Director, Education Director of the Offshore Refresher Course, and former Dean and President of the Australian College of Pharmacy Practice, he has influenced policy and professional development. Notable awards include the NSW Lifetime Achievement Award from the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia in 2024, Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2021 for service to pharmacy, and the University of Sydney Pharmacy Practice Foundation Medal of Excellence. Key publications encompass 'Development and evaluation of an interprofessional student-led influenza vaccination clinic for medical, nursing and pharmacy students' (2021, Pharmacy Practice), 'Evaluation of a vaccination training program for pharmacy graduands in Australia' (2020, Currents in Pharmacy Teaching and Learning), and contributions on codeine rescheduling and osteoarthritis pain management.
