About Peter K.

Peter K. Norquest earned his Ph.D. in 2007 from the Joint PhD program in Anthropology and Linguistics at The University of Arizona. His dissertation, "A Phonological Reconstruction of Proto-Hlai," offers a detailed phonological analysis and reconstruction of the Proto-Hlai language, the ancestor of the Hlai languages spoken on Hainan Island, China, within the Kra-Dai family. This work was approved by the Graduate College and faculty from the Department of Anthropology. Norquest's research in historical linguistics focuses on Kra-Dai languages, phonological systems, and comparative reconstruction methods. He served as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Anthropology at The University of Arizona following his doctorate and is affiliated as a Visiting Scholar in the School of Anthropology.

In 2015, Norquest published his dissertation as the book "A Phonological Reconstruction of Proto-Hlai" in Brill's Languages of Asia series. Other key publications include "Word structure in Chamic: prosodic alignment versus segmental faithfulness" (2005), "Coevolution of languages and genes on the island of Sumba, eastern Indonesia" co-authored with J. Stephen Lansing et al. (2007), "The phonetic status of the (inter)dental approximant" (2010), "Computational Feature-Sensitive Reconstruction of Language Relationships: Developing the ALINE Distance for Comparative Historical Linguistic Reconstruction" (2008), "Isolation, contact and social behavior shaped genetic diversity in West Timor" (2014), "Deep ancestry of collapsing networks of nomadic hunter-gatherers in Borneo" (2017), "alineR: an R Package for Optimizing Feature-Weighted Alignments and Linguistic Distances" (2017), and "Classification of (Tai-)Kadai/Kra-Dai languages" (2021). He is currently working on a phonological reconstruction of the Proto-Kam-Sui lexicon. Norquest's scholarship integrates linguistics and anthropology to explore language evolution, genetic diversity, and cultural dynamics in Southeast Asia and the Pacific.
